Mike Way, principal of Web Wrights, is a software developer with over 32 years of software engineering and design experience. A varied career with several dynamic organisations in the IT industry has given him practical experience of the entire software life cycle across a broad range of industry sectors. He has developed solutions for diverse organisations including NATO, British Airways, and NHS Scotland, to name a few.
Having worked with Web-based applications since the early 90s, Mike has always been an early adopter of Internet technologies. In recent years, Mike has become more and more engaged in the world of Android, due to its massive market penetration and the power of Java as an open programming platform. He even created an Android app for his local water sports community in Devon, England, where he lives and spends his free time sailing and kitesurfing.
Some of the big mobile computing questions Mike strives to answer are:
- What will be the dominant platform?
- Will HTML5 eventually eliminate the need for native applications?
- What do we really want from tablets?
When asked what the future holds for mobile computing, Mike says, “Prior to 2007 most of us only dreamt of having good access to email and Web on the move. The idea of location-based services was but a twinkle in the eye of the visionaries. Now smart-phone users take for granted the ability to ask their phone for directions to the nearest Italian restaurant! The next huge leaps look to be triggered by the maturation of voice technologies and a probable explosion of ideas around Near Field Communication (NFC).”
Mike holds an Honour’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Coventry University. He is the course author and instructor for Learning Tree’s course entitled Developing Applications for Android™ Devices.
