Hey, Program Managers! Have a Look at Managing Successful Programmes (MSP®)

I am impressed by the number of folks who have qualified for and passed the PgMP certification offered by PMI.  Experienced program managers looking for a great companion certification should take a closer look at the set of three Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) certification exams: foundation, practitioner and advanced.

Just as PRINCE2®  is a roadmap for project managers, MSP offers a similar road map for program managers looking for best practices and a proven way to get the job done in the program arena. MSP defines programme management as “the action of carrying out the coordinated organization, direction and implementation of a dossier of projects and transformational activities to achieve outcomes and realize benefits of strategic importance to the business”.

The structured framework found in MSP helps organizations avoid the pitfalls associated with program management and transformational change in an organization. Program management is control at the strategic level within a business, and often provides the framework and processes where successful projects are taking place within a program.

The MSP framework is based on three core concepts: principles, governance themes, and transformational flow.

The seven MSP Principles are derived from positive and negative lessons learned from programme experiences. They are the seven common factors that underpin the success of any transformational change in an organization, particularly at the program level.

The MSP® Transformational Flow provides six processes that map out a route through the life cycle of a programme from its conception through to the delivery of the new capability, outcomes and benefits.

We will dig into each of these three MSP core concepts in more detail in subsequent posts.  For folks who are interested in achieving the first two levels of MSP® certification, Learning Tree now offers a course on achieving MSP® Foundation and Practitioner certification, so be sure to check it out!
